UCSB MCC Present Les Filles de Illighadad (Live in Concert)
On Friday, April 22nd, the UCSB MultiCultural Center, KCSB-FM, and the UCSB Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Music (CISM) co-present Les Filles De Illighadad: A Night Of Tuareg Music from Niger.
Les Filles will perform live in concert at 730pm in UCSB’s MultiCultural Center Theater.
Fatou Seidi Ghali, lead vocalist and performer of Les Filles de Illighadad is the first female Tuareg guitarist. Her skill with the instrument is groundbreaking, but her musical direction is also very interesting. In a place where gender norms have created two divergent musics, where Tuareg Desert Blues has become internationally recognized, Fatou and her group Les Filles have reasserted the role of tende music in Tuareg guitar, incorporating the traditional drum and the pounding calabash, half-buried in water.
